Saltwater Community Centre
| Croxon Ramsay Architects
Saltwater Community Centre in Point Cook is at the
frontline of creating community in a rapidly expanding
part of Melbourne.
As a result of examining the successes and failures of
other comparable centres, the architects were able to
persuade Wyndham City Council to reconsider what
constitutes a community centre and to invest heavily in
non-programmed social spaces. The project integrates
a remarkable kindergarten, outdoor gathering spaces,
commercial kitchen and various rooms for educational
and social uses. Other opportunities presented by
sustainability and public art initiatives were equally
exploited to create a centre that is thoughtful and
clearly demonstrates an investment in the local
community.
As a deliberate counterpoint to the surrounding flatlands
a new landscape has been created in consultation
with Xylem Landscape Architecture. This gesture is
inverted along the building’s main circulation spine; its
undulating roof form and clerestory windows articulate
an interior volume with a delightful sense of place for
its occupants. The design of the centre offers hope for
the suburban fringes and the architectural profession in
reclaiming a strong curatorial role coordinating program,
sustainability, landscape and built form.
