BATES SMART AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE IN THE MEDIA
NATIONAL AWARD |
Places Women Make
| Jane Jose
In Australia it is mostly men behind the design and plans
of our cities; the man-made spaces. But how would our
cities look if more women designed them?
Drawing on personal experience and stories gathered
from architects and planners over a twenty year period,
Jane Jose uncovers some of the females who have
shaped and influenced our cities, towns and landscapes,
making better places to live.
In the telling of this contribution to our cities, its
buildings, spaces and political agendas, Jane Jose
meanders through history capturing the courage and
talent of the influential few. In doing so, she provokes
timely questions about gender equality. How can we
create inclusive cities if women lack an equal voice as
planners and designers? With females comprising 50
percent of architecture graduates, will more women
come to author public spaces?
Awarded for its potential as a catalyst for change, the
jury hopes that this book will encourage more stories
and insights into the contribution of women not part of
this telling.
